Art History Group

Several informal Art History courses and lectures have been written and presented for members of Stokesley and District U3A. The first of these courses, on Impressionism and the Impressionists, ran from January to June 2006 and was enthusiastically received, as was the course on Understanding Paintings, which ran from January to June 2007.

All meetings are held in Stokesley Community Centre, Activity Room 2, on the first Thursday of each month. A charge of £1 is made to pay for the room. (Note the change of venue; we are no longer meeting in the Town Hall.)

The format for our meetings in 2010 will again be in three parts:

Painting of the Month - A detailed look at a famous painting
Your favourite painting or artist - Members talk about a favourite painting or artist for 10-15 minutes (or longer if you want). Talk about it in your own words, or do some research using books and the Internet. Everyone joins in a discussion of the painting or artist.
Art movements/styles - A survey of 800 years of Western art history as seen through the different art movements/styles.

Please note that there will be no meetings of the Art History Group in July and August. We will resume in September. The programme we have planned is:

September   (Thursday 2nd, 10-12)
Favourite Painting of Artist – Sheila Petrie to talk about aspects of Impressionism
Painting of the Month – The Rehearsal on the Stage by Edgar Degas, 1873

October   (Thursday 7th, 10-12)
Favourite Painting of Artist – Paul Dixon to talk about the origins of art in cave paintings
