Art History Group

Stokesley & District Art History Group was formed in January 2006. We meet on the first Thursday of each month in Stokesley Community Care Centre, Activity Room 2 from 10-12 (with the exception of July, August and December) to look at great paintings and artists. A charge of £1 is made to pay for the room.

The meetings are informal – no tests, no examinations, people just come along and listen and talk, look at paintings and join in the discussion. No prior knowledge of art history is required.

Initially a series of courses, such as Impressionism and the Impressionists, Understanding Paintings, A Gentle Introduction to 20th-century Paintings, etc., were presented. However, over time, the format of the meetings has changed. The meetings are now varied, consisting of three 30 minute presentations, with time for discussion by members. These sessions now encourage members to take part by giving short presentations.

A regular feature of the meetings over the past 4 years has been Painting of the Month in which a famous painting was discussed in detail. This feature will be suspended between January and June 2012 whilst a series of 6 talks on Women Artists from the Renaissance to the 20th century will be presented. Picture of the Month will return in September.

The format for our meetings from January to June 2012 will therefore be in three parts:
Women Artists from the Renaissance to the 20th century

Your favourite painting or artist - Members talk about a favourite painting or artist for 10-15 minutes (or longer if you want). Talk about it in your own words, or do some research using books and the Internet. Everyone joins in a discussion of the painting or artist.

Art movements/styles - A continuing survey of 800 years of Western art history as seen through the different art movements/styles.

Note: There will be no meeting in December 2011.
