Art History Group

Several informal Art History courses and lectures have been written and presented for members of Stokesley and District U3A. The first of these courses, on Impressionism and the Impressionists, ran from January to June 2006 and was enthusiastically received, as was the course on Understanding Paintings, which ran from January to June 2007.

2008

The meetings from September to November will continue with the successful format begun in April and will include the following elements:

  • Painting of the Month – A detailed look at a famous painting.
  • Your favourite painting or artist – Members  talk about a favourite painting or artist for 10-15 minutes (or longer if you want)
              - Talk about it in your own words, or do some research on it using
                   books and the internet.
              - Everyone joins in a discussion of the painting or artist.
  • Art Galleries of the World on the Internet - We visit the web site of a great Art Gallery, such as the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in St Petersburg, etc. and see what paintings they have and how they present their paintings

The programme will be:

November   (Thursday 6th, 10-12)
Favourite Painting or Artist – Paul Dixon to talk on a favourite painting by Jan van Eyck
Painting of the Month – The Arnolfini Marriage by Jan van Eyck, 1434
Internet Art Gallery – The Hermitage, St Petersburg

All meetings are held in Stokesley Town Hall and a charge of £1 is made to pay for the hire of the room.
